3.1 Contacting the Target by Email and Phone
(メールや電話で対象者に連絡する)

Hi, Lisa, I need to talk with you.

Sure! What’s up?

I’m now planning to visit the UK for my research about English gardens. I hope to interview the manager of a garden and need to make an appointment with him. This has to be done before my visit, so I’ll probably email him beforehand. But I’m not confident about sending formal email messages or making phone calls in English.

Such email and phone calls may be challenging at first. This might be because you just don’t know how to write effective email
nor how to talk on the phone well. Also, you might want to avoid being inadvertently rude to the recipient and hope to increase
your chances to have your favors heard. Actually, there are expressions used specifically in email or conversations on the
phone.

If I familiarize myself with such etiquettes and phrases, I believe sending email and making phone calls will be a lot easier.

That’s right. Let’s proceed to the next section. We will study manners and phrases for email and phone calls in more detail.
