overview. Before proceeding to watch the lecture
video, please familiarise yourself with the
technical terms (and a few Japan-specific terms)

- Lingua franca: a language that is used for communication between people who speak different languages
- EMI: English medium instruction (teaching academic subjects in English)
- ELT: English language teaching
- Uniqlo: a Japanese clothing company
- Rakuten: a Japanese online retailing company
- Englishes: a term used to emphasise that English is not a single kind of language
- Global Englishes: a research paradigm that aims to unite research conducted on World Englishes, ELF, EIL, translanguaging and the multilingual turn
- World Englishes: a research paradigm that examines English in different contexts
- ELF (English as a lingua franca): As a phenomenon, it relates to the use of English as a contact language among speakers with different first languages. As a research paradigm, it involves research examining such use of English.
- EIL (English as an international language): a research paradigm that focuses on the globalisation of English
