9.1 Invitation to a Faculty Interview
(面接に呼ばれたら)

Hey, I’ve been lucky and received an invitation to a faculty interview for next week.

Great! What would you do during the interview?

Let me see… I will need to give a teaching demonstration in English! It’s about 10 minutes. Oh, no! I’ve never done this before. IN ENGLISH!! I really want to skip the interview, but I don’t want to miss this opportunity.

Hum, understandable. In Japan, the number of teaching positions where you need to teach in English has increased. I know, as a non-native speaker of English, you may find interviews in English difficult, but it’s still worth meeting the challenge. This challenge will increase the possibilities for your future in academia.

OK, but I’ve never given a teaching demonstration. How can I prepare for it?

Certainly, you’ve never experienced a teaching demonstration, but don’t worry. You acquired the knowledge and presentation skills in Modules 1 through 5 and some teaching skills in Modules 7 and 8. Why don’t you make use of this knowledge and these skills when you give the teaching demonstration? In this module, I’ll show you how to prepare for a teaching demonstration using techniques from Microteaching methodology. After you complete this lesson, I’m sure you’ll be able to go to the interview with confidence.
