8.2 Context of Class
(授業のコンテクスト)

Now, let’s see how to prepare a lesson plan. We need to consider two main factors: the context of the class and the content of the class. Shall we talk about the first one, the context of the class you teach first?

Sure.

There are three main points you should check regarding the context of the class. The first point is what course you’re teaching. I recommend that you look at the course design even though you’re a guest speaker for just one slot.

Certainly, I should know the sequences of ideas and information that move through the course. Then, I can set the goal for my lecture and consider how my class is linked to other classes.

Exactly! The second step is to collect information about your students, for example, their grades, the diversity of the group, their background and abilities/skills, and so on. Also, it will be useful if you know how much your students already know about the subject.

Such information must be necessary when I plan what to talk about during the class.

Finally, check the classroom environment.

I agree. I’ll see what the lecture room is like and what facilities and equipment are available in that classroom.
