6.1 How to Approach Researchers at a Conference
(国際会議で参加者と知り合いになる方法)

I’m going to another international conference. I’m excited, because I’m going to be giving a presentation there. In addition, I’m interested in a keynote speech by a famous scholar in my field and some poster presentations by young researchers.

Sounds nice. It must be a big conference.

Yeah. Besides, I’m also looking forward to attending gatherings or some casual occasions like receptions, coffee breaks and excursions, where many researchers will meet each other and exchange ideas.

It would be a great chance for you to broaden the possibilities in your research life by building a network in academia. For example, you might meet a key person who you can do collaborative research with in the future.

I’m really excited, but, at the same time, I’m a bit nervous about communication with researchers from various backgrounds. I’m very shy and I haven’t had much experience with such situations so far.

Hmm. If you want to overcome this problem, the best solution is to challenge this.

I agree.

In this module, we’ll learn how to approach researchers as well as to learn useful expressions for effective communication at a conference.
