The lectureship, “The Asahi Lectures” is an interdepartmental educational program begun in 2011 with the endowment of the Asahi Shimbun Company. It promotes debate across disciplinary boundaries and unites diverse areas of knowledge.
Distinctive Features of the Lectures
- It is a general education course for third- and fourth-year undergraduates and graduate students studying in special- ized disciplinary programs. The aim is to provide these students with an opportunity for lateral communication with other disciplines and broaden their perspectives.
- The lectures are from areas in both the arts and sciences. Each year, a topic is chosen which can be approached from multiple disciplinary perspectives.
- The lectures are delivered to the wider public through Todai Open Course Ware website. There are also plans to broadcast lectures to high schools over the Internet.
